MATTEO COCCI, born in 1974 in Prato, he first accomplished the Liceo Artistico and graduated thereafter from the Academy of Arts in Florence with a degree in Scenografia. Subsequently, in 2001, he opened his first studio where he has been developing his aesthetic artistic research, such as working with mixed media on board, mixing oil, cast, collage, acrylics and fiber materials. Cocci’s paintings develop through an original sedimentation of enigmatic symbols and synthetic forms that swarm on corroded surfaces, flowing from an abyss of emotional drives. Etched in bitumen and imprinted on sheets that are in their turn applied to board, these mnemonic traces lie on the border between the dreamlike and the tangible, between the grotesque and the rational. There are moods, fragments of writing (Andati / Gone), visionary glimpses that come together in works that can be considered the legitimate heirs of surrealist automatisms and the primitive spontaneity of Art Brut.
There is the longing to tell stories that may or may not have happened; of creatures from an imagined world created of myths that’d escape from open drawers; there are bulls and goats, strangely unfamiliar figures with holy amulets, bowls and dogs, flying fishes, and pocket circuses which reinvent itself every time the story is being retold. Commistioni di gesso, carte, bitume, acrilici, fibre e oli compongono l’ordito strutturale ligneo su cui si fissano perenni le antropomorfe figurine ancestrali, stirate, graffiate, solcate, appiattite, isolate o ammucchiate su sfondi monocordi chiari e scuri che vengono dilaniati da spatolate di caldo colore contrastante e corposo.
Mutuando dalle tecniche delle prime avanguardie novecentesche del collage e dalle più recenti del suo ineluttabile opposto, il decollage dei primi anni ’50 del XX secolo, Cocci elabora un linguaggio pittorico estremamente vitale ed ermetico, che sfugge alla logica strutturata del razionale, tuttavia capace di ridestare inconsce emozioni oniriche che hanno il potere di disturbare, commuovere, divertire.
Parole, segni, numeri, figure astratte e animali curiosi popolano l’inesauribile universo creativo di Matteo Cocci, esercitando una forza magnetica di attrazione sullo spettatore.
